She joins Lee Tockar and Cathy Weseluck as voice actors attending the west coast get-together.

SF Weekly Begins Season 2 Reviews

Sherilyn Connelly over at San Francisco Weekly has a long-running contribution of ponies to the SF Weekly Exhibitionist blog. Connelly recently wrapped up her season one episode reviews, and now she’s tackling season two. She recently posted her Return of Harmony review, giving a blow-by-blow take of the opener. Screengrabs and video clips are combined with running commentary aimed at both fans and newcomers alike.

There’s been a few petitions swirling around to encourage Hasbro to produce new and different kinds of merchandise outside of the core My Little Pony product. The new fanbase sprouting around Friendship is Magic has generated new opportunities and frontiers for products, and fans feel that Hasbro is leaving opportunities on the table. Do petitions have a chance to change that? Merch-hungry pony fans hope so.

» Everfree NW Announces Cathy Weseluck

Everfree Northwest announced today via their Facebook page that Cathy Weseluck, the voice of Spike and the Mayor, will be attending the west coast’s pony convention. Besides ponies, Cathy has had many voiceover and live action roles in the past, notably in InuYasha, Ranma 1/2, and Kid vs. Kat. Cathy joins Lee Tockar as the currently announced official show staff guests of honor. Both will also be attending Bronycon on the east coast prior to Everfree NW.

Everfree NW will run on August 17-19 at the Sea-Tac Airport Holiday Inn in Seattle, Washington.

Lauren Faust Featured in LA Weekly Series

L.A. Weekly’s People 2012 issue contains a short spotlight on Friendship is Magic’s creator, Lauren Faust. There isn’t much new ground, as it’s basically a short summary of what she’s done in the past few years. If “cute” isn’t among the top three words you think of in the first five seconds, you’re probably a statistical outlier among the fan community. It’s just so damned cute.

Cuteness is so ingrained into the show that you can’t avoid watching it for the adorable factor. It basks in the immersive warmth of a world that incorporates hearts and rainbows into its architecture and in which terms like cutie mark and cuteceañera are thrown at the audience for us to take in stride. It’s inseparable from the show; kids and fans wouldn’t think of demanding it to be less cute than it is. The show’s visual design and texture of writing has confidently staked out territory in a traditionally low-rent corner of the commercial artistic world—and the property values there are skyrocketing.

» Everfree NW announces Lee Tockar

Today on their twitter Everfree Northwest announced that Lee Tockar will be attending the west coast fan convention. Lee, the voice of Snips and other male characters on the show, is now attending both Bronycon and Everfree Northwest. This is the first major show talent announcement for Everfree, and hopefully more will be coming down the line.

At Ottawa Comic Con, John de Lancie announced that he would be working on a documentary about the My Little Pony fan community. de Lancie, best known for his role as Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation, provides the voice of Discord, the devious trickster in the two-part Return of Harmony. John isn’t happy with the mainstream media’s portrayal of the unexpected fanbase that’s sprouted up around the show. What does this portend for the community and its public relations problem?
